How to Replace a Lost NJ Boating Safety Certificate Fast

Boat Safe US, LLC works closely with the NJ State Police Marine Services Bureau to bring you the most professional and up to date Boaters Safety Course. That is why we provide you with the link to the Marine Services Bureau

New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate

Start by Figuring Out Who Issued Your Certificate

Your boating safety certificate is a lifetime credential, so your record is already on file. Replacing it is really just about accessing that record.

If you took your course with a private provider like BoatSafe US, the fastest option is often to contact them directly. Many providers keep student records and can issue a duplicate quickly, sometimes for a small administrative fee.

If you do not remember your provider or took the course years ago you will need to go directly through the New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau.

The Fastest Official Method (Direct Through the State)

The state does not require you to retake the course or pay a fee to get a replacement. Instead, they handle requests directly through email.

To request your duplicate certificate, send an email to: NJBoatCert@njsp.gov

Include the following details so they can locate your record:

  • Your full legal name

  • Date of birth

  • Current mailing address

  • Previous address (if you have moved)

  • A clear photo or scan of your ID

  • Your contact information

  • A brief explanation (lost, damaged, name change, etc.)

Once verified, the state will mail your replacement certificate to you.

How Fast Is “Fast”?

There is no instant download or same-day print option from the state. Most replacements take a few weeks to arrive by mail after your request is processed.

If you are in a rush for example, right before a holiday weekend contacting your original course provider may be quicker, since some can issue duplicates faster than the state.

What Happens If You Boat Without It?

Even if you are properly certified, New Jersey law requires you to carry the physical certificate on board while operating a vessel.

If you are stopped without it, you can still be fined. Enforcement is handled by the New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau, and penalties for not having your certificate typically range from $100 to $500.

In other words, being in the system is not enough. You need the card with you.

Out-of-State Certificates

If your boating certificate was issued in another state, New Jersey cannot replace it. You will need to contact the original issuing agency to request a duplicate.

Most states recognize each other’s certificates as long as they are approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, but replacements must come from the original source.
