Captain Vincent Lombardi is a veteran New York mariner with more than three decades of experience on the water. He began his career as a deckhand with New York Waterway, worked his way up to captain, and today serves as a Port Captain, where he oversees vessel operations, safety, training, and marine inspections for one of the busiest ferry systems in the country. Captain Lombardi is best known for his role in the "Miracle on the Hudson." On January 15, 2009, he was at the helm of the ferry Thomas Jefferson when US Airways Flight 1549 ditched into the icy Hudson River after a bird strike disabled both engines. Within minutes, Captain Lombardi and his crew became the first vessel to reach the aircraft, rescuing 56 passengers from the wings of the sinking plane and playing a critical role in the extraordinary rescue effort that saved all 155 people on board.
