What Is the Boating Safety Certificate Replacement Cost in New Jersey?

Boat Safe US, LLC works closely with the NJ State Police Marine Services Bureau to bring you the most professional and up to date Boaters Safety Course. That is why we provide you with the link to the Marine Services Bureau

New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate

What is its cost?

Losing your boating safety certificate right before a weekend on the water can be stressful. Naturally, the first concern is whether replacing it will be expensive or complicated.

The good news is simple: replacing your official New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate is completely free.

Here’s how the process works, when it costs nothing, and the few situations where a small fee might apply.

The Official Replacement Cost Is $0

If your certificate has been lost, damaged, or needs updating due to a name or address change, you do not need to retake the course or pay any fee.

The New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau handles all official certificate records and replacements. As long as your original certificate was issued by the state, they will reprint and mail you a duplicate at no cost.

It’s worth emphasizing this because many people make the mistake of trying to solve the problem by retaking the course. That is unnecessary and the system will typically flag it as a duplicate anyway.

How to Request Your Free Replacement

The process is straightforward but handled manually through email rather than an online portal.

To request a replacement, you need to contact the Marine Services Bureau.

In your message, you’ll need to provide enough information for them to locate your record and verify your identity. This includes your full legal name, date of birth, and current mailing address. If your details have changed, such as after a move or name change, you should also include your previous information so they can match your file.

You will also need to attach a clear photo or scan of a valid ID, along with your contact details and a brief explanation of why you are requesting the replacement.

Once your information is verified, the state will print and mail your new certificate.

Why Some People End Up Paying Anyway

Even though the official replacement is free, some boaters still end up paying fees and it usually comes down to confusion between the state certificate and third-party course providers.

Companies like Boat-Ed, BoaterExam, and AceBoater sometimes offer replacement cards for the course you took through their platform. These typically cost between $10 and $16.

While these cards can serve as a backup, they are not required if you already have (or can request) your official state-issued certificate. In most cases, it is better to go directly through the state and avoid the extra cost.

Don’t Forget About the MVC Boat Endorsement

New Jersey has a slightly unique system, especially for non-tidal waters. In addition to your boating safety certificate, you may also need a “BOAT” endorsement on your driver’s license.

If you lose your physical driver’s license, replacing your boating certificate alone will not solve the issue. You will need to request a duplicate license through the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.

There is a standard fee for this service currently $11 and your new license will automatically include your boating endorsement.

What to Expect After You Apply

Once your email request is submitted, the process typically takes a few weeks. There is no instant download or temporary digital version issued for replacements, so you will need to wait for the physical card to arrive by mail.

During that time, it is important to remember that New Jersey law requires you to have your certificate on board while operating a vessel. Even if you are in the system, not having the physical card with you can still result in a citation.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I replace my certificate if I got it years ago?

Yes. The state maintains records of issued certificates, so replacements can be processed even many years later as long as your details can be verified.

Can I boat while waiting for my replacement?

No. You are required to carry your physical certificate while operating a vessel.

How long does the replacement take?

Most requests are processed and delivered within a few weeks.

Do I need to pay to update my name or address?

No. Updates are handled the same way as replacements and are completely free.

Will I receive a temporary or digital copy?

No. The state currently only issues physical replacement certificates by mail.
