New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate

Finding a location to take your New Jersey boating exam?

This is a common point of confusion for many new boaters. Because of how the state’s certification process is structured, you cannot complete the entire process from home. Even if you finish your coursework online, the State of New Jersey requires the final exam to be taken in person under a certified proctor.

The good news? Exam locations are widely available across the state, making it easy to find a testing center near you.

The In-Person Requirement

The New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau oversees boating safety regulations.

Under these rules:

An online course alone is not enough

You may study and complete quizzes online

But the final exam must always be taken in person

Approved online providers include platforms like Boat-Ed and Boater Exam, but all students must complete the final step at a physical testing location.

Where Are Boating Exams Held?

Boating exams are not conducted at the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) or typical government offices.

Instead, approved providers host exams at convenient community locations.

You will typically find exams held at:

  1. VFW Posts and American Legion halls

  2. Volunteer fire departments

  3. Community centers and Knights of Columbus halls

  4. Marinas, yacht clubs, and boating schools

  5. Senior centers and municipal buildings

These venues provide the appropriate classroom environment required for proctored testing.

Exam providers rotate locations across:

  1. North Jersey

  2. Central Jersey

  3. South Jersey

This ensures there is usually a test site within a short driving distance—whether you're in Monmouth County, Bergen County, or along the Jersey Shore.
