New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate

What happens if you fail?

If you fail the New Jersey boating exam, you will not receive your Boating Safety Certificate that day. However, you are allowed to retake the test but New Jersey law enforces strict rules on how and when you can try again.

You must wait at least 24 hours before taking the exam a second time. If you fail on that second attempt, you will be required to start over and complete a new state-approved boating safety course before testing again.

The Passing Requirement

The New Jersey boating safety exam is a closed-book, multiple-choice test designed to confirm that you understand navigation rules, safety procedures, and state laws.

To pass, you must score at least 80%. On a standard 60-question exam, that means answering 48 questions correctly. Anything below that threshold is considered a failing score, even if you were only one or two questions short.

What Happens After a First Failure

If you don’t pass on your first attempt, you won’t be able to retake the exam immediately. State regulations require a mandatory 24-hour waiting period before your second attempt.

This rule exists to prevent rushed retakes and to give you time to review the material. Most instructors will encourage you to revisit the sections you struggled with, especially navigation rules and New Jersey-specific laws before scheduling your next test.

What Happens If You Fail a Second Time

New Jersey takes boating safety seriously, and the rules become stricter after a second failed attempt.

If you fail the exam twice, your testing eligibility for that course ends. You cannot simply schedule another exam session. Instead, you are required to enroll in and complete a brand-new approved boating safety course before you can attempt the test again.

That means repeating the full 8-hour education requirement, not just the exam.

The "Last-Minute Prep"

Imagine you completed your online course weeks ago but didn’t review the material before your exam. You show up, take the test, and score a 75%.

At that point, you won’t receive your certificate, and you won’t be allowed to try again the same day. You’ll need to wait at least 24 hours before your second attempt.

If you return the next day without properly reviewing and score below 80% again, your original course completion is no longer valid for testing. You’ll need to start over with a new course before you can try again.

How to Recover and Pass on Your Next Attempt

Failing the exam isn’t the end, it just means you need a more focused approach before your next try.

Start by identifying where you struggled. While you won’t be able to keep the test, most instructors can point you toward the general topics you missed. From there, go back through your manual or online course and review those sections carefully.

Practice quizzes are one of the most effective tools. If you used an online provider, retake the quizzes until you’re consistently scoring high. When you return for your second attempt, take your time and read each question and answer choice carefully. Most mistakes come from rushing, not lack of knowledge.

What the Law says

Under N.J.A.C. Title 13, Chapter 61, New Jersey law clearly defines the retesting process. It states that anyone who fails the exam on their first attempt must wait at least 24 hours before trying again. It also requires that anyone who fails a second time must successfully complete a new approved boating safety course before becoming eligible to test again.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What happens if I fail the NJ boating exam?

You will not receive your certificate and must wait at least 24 hours before attempting the test again. A second failure requires you to retake the entire course.

What is the passing score?

You need an 80% or higher. On a 60-question exam, that means at least 48 correct answers.

Can I retake the exam the same day?

No. Same-day retakes are not allowed under New Jersey law.

Is the second test the same as the first?

Not exactly. Exams are pulled from a pool of approved questions, so you may see a different version.

Can I use notes during the retake?

No. Every attempt must be taken in a closed-book, proctored setting.
